JUST ONE
SMALL POINT TO MAKE
Despite falling behind late
in the game, the under 18's staged an impressive comeback at
Northampton this weekend to leave them within a single point of
being crowned champions.
Having passed the youth team coach, broken
down on the hard shoulder of the M1, on our way to Sunderland we
were a little concerned that Joe Gallen wouldn't have much of a
side to select from! However the players did eventually make it
and, in the end, Gallen only made one change from last weeks
victorious team.
With Romone Rose suspended, Gallen moved
Billy Coyne back into midfield, Josh Ford took his place at
right back alongside Andrew Howell, Aaron Goode and Lee Brown.
Danny Maguire lined up on the right side of midfield with Matt
O'Brien partnering Coyne in the middle and Chris Arthur deployed
on the left wing.
Upfront Keiron St. Aimie was paired with
Angelo Balanta. Chris Goodchild was once again between sticks.
It took until
past the hour mark for the game to spark into life but
unfortunately it was the home side who edged in front to test
the nerves of the impressive traveling R's support. However the
lads showed how determined they are not to let this title slip
away by scoring three times in the last twenty minutes.
First Balanta
was pulled down to win a penalty, which Maguire duly converted
to level the scores, then Maguire scored a second from another
dead ball position, this time curling a belting twenty five yard
free kick into the top corner. Finally Balanta continued his
scoring run when he bagged the third to send the watching
Rangers collective into a frenzy of celebrations and text
messages!
With both
Gillingham and Southend winning their final fixtures it means
the championship champagne had to be put on ice for another
seven days and title glory is now between us and Southend.
The Essex side
are currently top by goal difference from Gillingham in second.
With both sides having played all their games it means second is
the best Gillingham can achieve this season. Rangers finish
their campaign at Brighton on Saturday morning where, thanks to
our superior goal difference, just a point will seal Joe
Gallen's first league championship at this level.
Well have news
from that game online as soon as possible, good luck to the lads
- go get that trophy!
