R'S SHARE EIGHT WITH SHOTS

A Rangers reserve side packed with trialists, youth team players and Chris Barker played out a 4-4 draw against their Aldershot Town counterparts at The Recreation Ground this afternoon.

It was a topsy turvy affair with the young R’s coming from behind, and then taking the lead twice only to be denied a rare win late on.

The Shots hot the front when tubby winger Ryan Williams beat Matt Pickens in the R’s goal with a free kick from outside the area. Rangers got themselves back into the game when Danny Maguire replied in kind with a free kick from even further out. It is pleasing to see Maguire getting back to fitness having missed so much of the season through injury. He has a work experience loan running at AFC Wimbledon so hopefully he can get out and get a couple more games under his belt before the season ends.

Rangers hit the front when trialist Ross Kelly seized on a poor kick from Shots keeper David Guy and clattered it back over the keepers head and in off the bar from forty five yards. Shades of Stilian Petrov at Pride Park on Saturday.

It was 3-1 to the visitors shortly after half time when Tom Baddeley managed to hack a Chris Arthur cross into his own net. As has often been the case this season though the young reserves weren’t able to close the game out and Dan Read and Miles Jones had soon pounced to level things at three apiece.

Danny Maguire made it 4-3 to Rangers from the spot after another of the trialists, Tyrone Amery, had been fouled in the box. Once more Rangers weren’t able to hang on and with ten minutes left Miles Jones scored again to make it 4-4 and round off a good afternoons entertainment for those inside the rain soaked ground.

Rangers have three games left in this shambles of a league before yet another paper thin season of reserve fixtures is over. With any luck there will be some sort of rethink of the way this league is structured as it is about as much use as a cock flavoured lollipop at the moment.
