The Pre-Match Warm Up
Tuesday 28th March 2006
by Ron Norris & Simon Skinner

After four draws in a row Rangers go looking for a win against Stoke City at Loftus Road on Tuesday night, can we put three points on the table for the first time this month?

TEAM NEWS

Following on from the draw at Ninian Park at the weekend Rangers don’t have many injury worries to speak of. The usual suspects of Rowlands, Rose and Doherty are all sidelined for the foreseeable future and Gallen serves the second match of his three match ban. Evatt took a bang on the noggin on Saturday but will be fit to play.

Youngster Andrew Howell has been added to the squad after some impressive displays at youth and reserve team level this season. It remains to be seen whether the seventeen year old will do enough to make the bench or whether this is just to add to his experience. The starting XI isn’t likely to show any changes despite the fact that many fans would plump for a more attacking feel to the side in games at home.

As for Stoke, things are not quite so rosy. Johan Boskamp has a few selection headaches ahead of the game and probably isn’t helped by his continual bickering with any member of his staff that dare oppose him!

Top scorer Paul Gallagher was forced off in their goalless draw at Elland Road with a back injury and may not make this one. Their recent loan signing from Wigan, Aussie Josip Skoko missed that game with a groin injury and he is unlikely to make this one.

Sammy Bangoura was also taken off injured at Leeds and with Clint Hill picking up a knock in training things could be very different for The Potters. Boskamp will delay naming his side until as late as possible to give all four players the best chance of making it. On the plus side, Potteries pin up Luke Chadwick is likely to be back to gurn his way through this one. With so much focus on diving at the moment it will be interesting to see whether he is still happy to hurl himself to the deck at the slightest provocation.

A QUICK GUIDE TO OUR OPPONENTS

STOKE IN BRIEF

The Potters have had a funny old season. Behind the scenes squabbling between manager Johan Boskamp, Director of Football John Rudge and assistant manager Jan De Koning seems to have taken its toll. They have been similar to us, inconsistent, and their points tally shows this. Sammy Bangoura was heralded as their great hope for the season but he doesn’t seem to have got back to goalscoring form following his return from the African Cup of Nations. They are without a win on the road since victory at Luton in December; they are also struggling in front of goal with just four in their last ten league encounters.

OTHER MEETINGS

Stoke have never left Loftus Road with three points, although they have won on one occasion! It was way back in August 1974 when it was two points for a win. In the Nineties we have managed two 1-1 draws followed by two 1-0 wins, the last of which was earned with a cracker from Lee Cook live on Sky.

GENERAL INFORMATION

THE REFEREE

For the third time this season we have Elite List ref Peter Walton in charge of one of our games. Having taken charge of both the games against Leeds United Rangers will be hoping to win this one! He loves a card; he hasn’t managed to get through a game this season without taking someone’s name. He has been a ref in the pro game since the start of the 1998/99 season but has yet to officiate in a major final or make the international list.

Robbie James signed for Rangers from Stoke City for £100k in October 1984 and made his debut in November. The burley Welsh international played over 80 games for the club before moving on to Leicester City in June 1987. Robbie sadly collapsed and died whilst playing for Llanelli in February 1998 aged just 41.

RON AND SIMON'S PREDICT-OFF
RON: This will be another tetchy affair between two sides who don't have much time for each other and, add in the end of season blues, and I don't think it'll be the best game in the world to watch . However there is something very satisfying about the way we keep beating The Potters, they haven't won at Loftus Road for over thirty years and I don't think that'll change on Wednesday night. 2-1 to Rangers.

SIMON: This will be another tough game and the fact that Stoke haven’t won away since mid December will only make it tougher. Rangers have an unhappy knack of being kind to teams in need so I will be hoping that we are a bit more solid this time. We are a tough team to beat but we are struggling to kill teams off. This game will be won by the odd goal and I will take us to pinch it. 1-0 to Rangers.
