Obviously Tony Roberts didn’t mind
as he works for the R's as goalkeeping coach, but Dagenham and
Redbridge certainly felt they had a chance of beating us in the
LDV 2nd round, and let’s face it, who wouldn’t? Tony Scully even
scored bless him.
Lets pray then, that we manage to
forego the pleasures of Conference teams next year, by getting
promoted and not having to worry about the "Noddy's Toy Car
Trophy" anymore (even if by some miracle we happen to win the
darn thing this year!). Next year the Ex Rangers players may be
slightly better. There are after all plenty knocking about.
Battling for a place in the
Conference next year and subsequently the Trophy will be Crawley
Town, home of Karl Ready. They are in a good position in the Dr
Martens Premier and his experience could prove vital. Ok, I
know, he was never the most cultured of defenders, but he did a
job for us and no doubt does it well at that level. I for one
support recent tentative enquiries by the LSA about a possible
testimonial for him.
Over in the Ryman League another
challenger for promotion is Hornchurch. With no fewer than 3 ex
Rangers in their side, Mark Graham, Keith Rowland and
occasionally Bradley Allen, they are a force to be reckoned
with. This week they dumped Darlington out of the FA Cup with a
2-0 win.
Which brings me to an obscure
little fact. QPR may have been knocked out of the FA Cup, but
one of our current team was on the winning side. Our young left
winger Ben Walshe played in Gravesend and Northfleet's 1-0 win
at Chester! Ben will be the only QPR representative in the 2nd
round of the FA Cup whilst out on a season long loan to the
Ryman club. Not only that, but Sky Sports have decided to screen
the match at home to Notts County live on Saturday 6th December
at 5.35. So let’s make damn sure we give him all our support!
However, whilst cheering on young
Walshie, spare a thought for poor Wes Daly. Wes was also on loan
at Gravesend, but as his loan was only a months agreement, he
got recalled during our injury crisis and was made to play in
our defeat at Grimsby. So not only did he play and get knocked
out of the FA Cup on Saturday, but the team he was at a few days
before go through, and if he goes back, he'll be cup tied for
the next round! Gutted!
Making it through to the 2nd round
draw, were Barnet with a 2-2 draw against Stalybridge Celtic. So
the centre back partnership of Maddix and Plummer still have a
chance of making it through. Mixed fortunes for the pair on
Tuesday evening though. They were playing the aforementioned
Gravesend in the league, and scraped a 1-0 win, the winner? A
strikers finish from Chris Plummer! And just as well too, Danny
Maddix was sent off for a professional foul with 10 minutes to
go!
Hot off the press for those who
follow the fortunes of our trialists, some bloke called Dean
Marney scored an own goal for Harrow Borough on Tuesday night,
giving a victory to Kingsonian in The Ryman Premier. Is it the
real Dean Marney? Check a newspaper near you soon and remember,
you heard it here first …
Finally I also tracked down,
again, the now enigmatic Leon Jeanne. The once mercurial, now
misguided talent is still finding time to play football between
visits to the magistrates court. Gone it would seem are the days
of being hailed at Loftus Road and the Millennium Stadium for
the Welsh Under 21's. This weekend he was found to be netting
for Dinas Powys in the Motaquote Welsh League (that’s the one
that’s one step below the League of Wales!). He scored in their
3-1 win at Garw. What a shocking waste of talent.
If you hear of any similarly
shocking wastes of talent, let me know so we can all have a
laugh at their expense in the ex files...
